Though nobody enjoys the thought of having teeth pulled, occasionally a tooth can crack, break or become so decayed, diseased or crooked that the only solution left is a tooth extraction.
At Pediatrix Dental, we consider pulling teeth a last resort, but if it is required, we employ the very latest techniques and take every precaution to ensure the safety and comfort of the child all through the process.
At Pediatrix Dental we strive to make each procedure as painless as possible. To that end, our compassionate staff have several ways to help children through dental procedures. Children who are very young or who have a high level of anxiety that interferes with the cooperation necessary for the dentist to perform treatment may require some level of sedation. Sedation is also helpful for special needs children. There are many safe and effective medications available today that can help relax the child and promote a good environment for optimal and safe dental treatment.
Conscious sedation is an option for children who are mildly apprehensive. This highly effective method is administered by an inhalation method using nitrous oxide (N20-02).
Deep sedation is sometimes necessary for children that are unable by either age, or maturity level to cooperate during dental treatment. Our practice utilizes the Virginia Beach Ambulatory Surgical Center for children requiring one day out patient care.
Sedation dentistry is most helpful for:
- Children who require major treatment
- A very anxious child
- Children that have had traumatic dental experiences (sound and smell aversion)
- Children with a strong gag reflex
- Children who are medically compromised or have special needs
